Today I moved onto stencils at the Very Trendy Christmas 2.0 classroom.  I had watched Kristina Werner use a Tim Holtz stencil for card number one of her series, and so I bought it to use with my once used embossing paste.

I trimmed a sheet of red cardstock down and used my new "frog tape" to adhere the stencil down.  I started doing it just like I watch others do only to lift the stencil and find what I NEVER see on Kristina's videos or Catherine Pooler's videos...the embossing paste went under and oozed all over and I was, unhappy.

Then I sat and stared at the mess awhile before a great thought popped into my head...use the Simon Says Ugly Sweater stamp set and die, and make the good part, into a sweater.  Voila!  Then since I had a sweater and more "good" embossed red paper, why not a matching hat?  So I free hand cut out a hat and had an almost lovely set.  I think the holly leaves, part of the stamp set, look really good.

The paper I used to make the tag comes from a 6 x 6 paper pad I bought at Tuesday Morning.  It is just loaded with great winter paper.  The snowmen, snow and hill are all a part of the paper.  I used cocoa ink to stamp Warm Winter Wishes (Wplus9) and the only red ink pad I own... a lousy red pad from Michael's.  Shall we call it sort of faded Red Sox hat red?

I added green sequins, some stickle, some Wink of Stella and red, white and green ribbon from a floral arrangement received who knows how many years ago.  Have I mentioned what an awful hoarder I am with supplies I am sure I will use, someday?  Three cheers for me..  I actually used one of those items!!

So there it is... and I LOVE it!    Do you have a favorite RED ink pad?  Help!!!!!

ADDED:  I just realized that I totally missed Nordic.  This is Nordic and a stencil.

  1. Wow, I am loving that matching Nordic sweater and hat! The colors are so bright and cheery! I am amazed how you managed to use the "botched" piece and turned it into something this FABULOUS!! I find the trick of not messing up the paste is to use a thin (metal preferably) knife/ruler to scrap off the excess ( you need to keep your piece down, lift stencil only) . When you lift, do it carefully...I know you will have SUCCESS if you keep at it! I really like the Ruby Red and Raspberry Red from Hero Arts. Hope this helps.

  3. Way to turn an "oops" into a fabulous creation. I picked up on Nordic right away, and thought that was your intent from the beginning.
P.S. Don't worry about mistakes. We all make them. The pros either cleverly disguise them or don't show them on their videos/blogs at all. You are well on your way to being a pro at this. :)
